We had such a great day at Bevel Woodworking School learning how to carve wood spirits! Tommy was brilliant at breaking the whole process down into clear, step-by-step instructions, which made something quite challenging feel much easier and really enjoyable. Thanks Tommy Kelly for excellent, patient instruction. Cilian, my adult son, and I spent an intense but delightful weekend together, assembling two work benches with vices. The other people there were great company, and we helped each other where we could. There are hearty meals available locally, and tea and coffee at the workshop. The Bevel Woodworking School Adirondack Chair Course will surely rremain in my memory for years to come. Not only you come home with an amazing chair, you'll also have that sense of accomplishment. Myself and nephew attended a tool sharpening day at Bevel Woodworking. The facilities and teaching were excellent. Can’t believe I managed to make this chair in just 2 days. Tommy is an amazing tutor guiding us all through each step in making the chair. Mar 2018 - Spoon Carving / Jan 2022 - Birdhouse course / Mar 2022 tool sharpening / Jan 2024 Carve a Woodsprite Have just finished the Spoon carving workshop with my friend. It was a great day and I still can't believe that I came home with the beautiful spoons that I made from start to finish! I had absolutely no woodworking skills before this. Tommy was a great teacher, very patient, well organised and easy to get along with. I feel so proud of myself for what I achieved in just one day. I'll definitely be recommending Tommy and his courses to my family and friends. And you never know, I just might do another one :) Jan 2022 - Birdhouse course My friend and I had a really brilliant day making fabulous birdhouses from scratch. This was our second course with Tommy and it was just as good as the first one - the spoon carving workshop. Neither of us had any experience of woodworking but under Tommy's excellent tutoring we both produced stunning pieces of which we are extremely proud. My new birdhouse will take pride of place in my garden and I'm hoping my resident bluetits will use it this spring. We got to learn how to correctly use all the tools needed , from saws to spokeshaves to ribbon sanders, drills and everything in between. The whole day was relaxed and friendly and really enjoyable. I'm already looking to book my next course or 2 with Bevel. Mar 2022 Tool sharpening workshop I brought a load of my grandfathers tools along to see if they were any good and worth sharpening. I was delighted to find out that they were worth doing. It was another great workshop, thoroughly enjoyed it. Jan 2024 Carve a Woodsprite Again this was an excellent workshop. Tommy is a great teacher and is wonderfully patient with everyone. He has a lovely way of getting his points across. 12/12/23' On Saturday the 9th of December, I had my first experience working with wood in the Bevel Woodworking School. I genuinely would highly recommend the courses on offer at the school. The group was limited to eight which allowed Tommy to provide feedback and give pointers. I made a birdhouse on the day, during the process I was able to use a variety of power and hand tools, we were given the space to use the equipment which was all a very high standard. The class catered for all ability levels and there was a lovely atmosphere in the workshop as well as a stove which ensured we worked in comfort and warmth. I had an amazing June Bank Holiday weekend in Bevel Woodworking School making a beautiful Adirondack chair under the very watchful eye of the expert craftsman and wonderful tutor Tommy Kelly. I was a total beginner. I was aware of the tools but had never used any of them previously. The spirit of camaraderie in the class of 6 pupils was second to none. I found the experience of creating something so beautiful from wood, handcrafted by me, with help from Tommy of course, and amazing experience. I then got to take it home. Update: March 2023. On the first anniversary of Adirondack 1, I returned to Bevel to make a second. As usual, a warm welcome from Tommy, in his fully fitted workshop with plenty of room for all 8 participants. Two full days of woodwork, banter and plenty of refreshments resulting in Adirondack 2. A large part of the experience is meeting other like minded amateurs - like Barbara 1, Barbara 2, Ken, Pat, George, Lorraine and Noelle. Only 79,980 hours more to get to genius level? Thanks Tommy, Carmel. I'll be back ? ---------- Oct '22 Just returned from my second trip to Bevel Furniture School. As usual the quality of the tools and materials are second to none and Tommy's infinite patience and expertise is guaranteed. PLUS, this time I brought home an awesome free standing Bird table, which I already treasure. They do gift vouchers too - a perfect Christmas/Birthday present? ---------- April 2022. Short Review: Book it, you'll love it, I promise, oh.....and you get to take a quality chair home with you, that you will cherish fo' evah. Longer Review: All I knew when I got to Bevel was that come hell or high water I'd be going home with a chair. What I didn't know was that I'd make new friends and have an insane need to get back there again for more of the same ASAP. As soon as I entered the workshop and met Tommy I knew I was in welcoming, safe hands. The setup in the workshop is fantastic, two to a bench, your own tools, (a little bit of sharing sometimes) oh and that apron to keep the glue off your tuxedo. Safety is paramount, and he has a unique yet subtle way of drumming that into you. There is a kitchen there with unlimited supplies of tea, coffee and biccies, but to be honest, you'll be so engrossed, it'll be a case of kitchen smitchen, like it was for me. Nice clean toilets too - all the comforts of home. The Adirondack chair course took two days, and there wasn't a minute that I was bored, add to that the craic, the learning and the LOL's. There were eight of us and from first meeting we were like old bosom buddies - Team Tommy, if you like. Everyone was so helpful and encouraging, and yes, I finished my chair and so did everyone else. A quality product that I will cherish for the rest of my days. There is just one big problem - it needs a companion, so you know...........! LOVED IT, thank you very much Tommy and Carmel (his financial advisor, Marketing Guru and Project Womanager) One thing to be aware of, when you do one of these courses, do make sure that your car can accommodate what you've made. Tommy will give you the dimensions in advance, it's up to you then to make sure your Fiat Bambino can take it.read more

Just attended the ‘Release the Spirit’ woodcarving course. What an excellent experience. A worthwhile day learning to carve. Having never attempted anything like this before the day was a great overall introduction to woodcarving and gaining experience and knowledge of using gouges and carving tools. I got this as a present from my 3 children and while the presents have improved over the last few years, this was by far the best so far. Tommy runs an excellent course and is a truly brilliant teacher. His explanations are simple and straightforward. Participating in a course at Bevel Woodworking School is most definitely a wonderful way to spend a weekend! The course was to make an Adirondack Chair. A gift from my husband and son, I had no idea what to expect and I was both excited and anxious on arrival. I need not have worried! Firstly this is a very professionally run business with safety a priority. The work space is well set out, and everything to hand that is required for the 2 day course and tea, coffee facilities available throughout the day. But it is Tommy that makes this course special, enjoyable and a great learning experience. Me and a friend recently did the 1 day Celtic carving course, and it was a great day. Very beginner friendly, Tommy is a great instructor. Very friendly and patient. I have just completed the sun chair 2 day course. It was excellent from start to finish. I have come away with a beautiful chair (even if I do say so myself :-)), and I learned a lot during the 2 days. Just completed my second Adirondack chair course and it was just enjoyable as the first. Great teaching skills from Tommy he explains step by step for everyone to follow so no pressure even if you have never picked up a tool in your life before. What a wonderful day! Thank you, Tommy. I got a Christmas present of a Woodworking Course to make a Birdhouse, and didn't quite know what to expect. Tommy provides a great mix of professional cabinet-maker, excellent teacher, and friendly atmosphere. I learned to use tools I'd never used before, and found out how to PROPERLY use some tools I'd been misusing... and at the end of a day of "relaxing activity" I was able to take home a birdhouse that I had made myself and that has since been much admired. Mar 2018 - Spoon Carving / Jan 2022 - Birdhouse course Have just finished the Spoon carving workshop with my friend. It was a great day and I still can't believe that I came home with the beautiful spoons that I made from start to finish! I had absolutely no woodworking skills before this. Tommy was a great teacher, very patient, well organised and easy to get along with. I feel so proud of myself for what I achieved in just one day. I'll definitely be recommending Tommy and his courses to my family and friends. And you never know, I just might do another one :) Jan 2022 - Birdhouse course My friend and I had a really brilliant day making fabulous birdhouses from scratch. This was our second course with Tommy and it was just as good as the first one - the spoon carving workshop. Neither of us had any experience of woodworking but under Tommy's excellent tutoring we both produced stunning pieces of which we are extremely proud. My new birdhouse will take pride of place in my garden and I'm hoping my resident bluetits will use it this spring. We got to learn how to correctly use all the tools needed , from saws to spokeshaves to ribbon sanders, drills and everything in between. The whole day was relaxed and friendly and really enjoyable. I recently spent a weekend with Tommy making an Adirondack chair. It was the first time I have ever made a piece of furniture, and I was completely delighted with the result, and the whole experience. Tommy took a group of about 8 of us with differing levels of ability, though a perfectly enjoyable learning experience. We all made near-perfect chairs, and Tommy's good humour and steady guidance made for a wonderful weekend and some new friends. Went on the weekend Adirondack chair course. Really enjoyed it, the instructor Tommy was very clear, told you exactly how to do simple things. Like he demonstrated sawing, what position your arm should be in, how to start the cut, what people generally do wrong. He had a good sense of humour too which made the class a relaxed and enjoyable experience. I managed to make the chair and was quite proud of my accomplishment. At the weekend I completed a course on Marquetry which I really enjoyed. I have done other courses at Tommys workshop making larger things but what was extra special about this was its a craft that can be carried on at home with a minimum of tools and space . A kitchen table and a box for the veneers is all your need to produce impressive pieces. People might be put off thinking you need Artistic skills, but to start you off Tommy has patterns of many images to work from . It was a day well spent . Thanks Bevelread more

I completed the lounger course in August. The work areas were well apart and safety masks were offered on arrival. Tommy was direct and practical with his advice. The Adirondack 2-day course at Bevel woodworking school was an absolutely fantastic experience. I only wish that the course could have run longer, because I was enjoying it so much. Tommy is an excellent teacher and despite the fact that we were creating a chair in just two days, it was a very relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. The chair itself is a wonderful design and to be able to say you made it yourself is a great feeling indeed. To anyone who is looking at the courses at Bevel and are undecided, I can honestly say you won't regret it. Doing a course like this is great anyway, but having the opportunity to be taught by an artisan like Tommy is an experience not to be passed up. I just spent a fantastic 2 days making an Adirondack chair at Bevel Woodworking School. I couldn't recommend this course enough. Tommy is an excellent teacher- informative, helpful and patient. I was a complete beginner, with zero experience using tools but Tommy made it fun and enjoyable! This was the first course Tommy has run since Covid and I felt all precautions were taken to ensure our safety. Everyone had their own tools and work benches allowing for social distancing. Without a doubt a five star weekend of woodworking. My wife and myself made two Adirondack chairs. It’s a great course for couples. I did a two-day course at Bevel Woodworking School in August 2020. It was excellently run and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd recommend it to anyone even if you have no previous experience of using the tools. Tommy is a super teacher and very patient. I agree with the other reviewers on the their positive reviews. This was the first course since Covid and the workshop was very well set up with hand sanitiser and wipes on every bench, at the entrance and in the kitchen area. There was a sink in the workshop too so no excuses not to wash those hands frequently! The workshop is spacious and has a high ceiling so we were all well distanced. I'd recommend Bevel School whether for one, two or a group of people. If you're doing the Adirondack Chair course make sure it'll fit in your car to take it home :) I hope to be back to do another course with Bevel - maybe even a second chair!read more

One of the best hands-on courses I have attended. I booked a weekend for my wife and I to each take on the Mackintosh Ingram chair. Tommy has a great blend of tutoring in place that allows you to skill up very quickly, while also able to get support from him on the complex pieces. All this is done with Tommy's great sense of humour and a lot of patience, as there were 8 of us there that weekend. We had no woodwork experience going in and really enjoyed the challenge of completing the chair. You will be surprised how much you can pick up in such a short time. I booked the Adirondack chair course after seeing the chairs over the years at Hook Lighthouse and promised myself I would do this one day.. Well I did this weekend and I couldn't have been more pleased I did so. Tommy is great teacher from start to finish from explaining the process of to how to handle the tools Using the tools and turning lengths of timber into a finished and somewhat comfortable chair. I was in at the deep end, with a lot of information given out at once. So, I focused on keeping up with each stage and not worrying too much about the bigger picture. It was terrifying and exhilarating and one of the best things I've done in years. I gained experience with hand and power tools which I really wanted. There was 8 in the class & we all meshed well and helped each other when possible. At the end of the 2 days we all had completed the Chair. I look at mine & I can hardly believe I made it. It's a beautiful piece of furniture. I plan on finishing mine with Danish oil, which will subtly highlight the beauty of the beach. I'm making an upholstered cushion for the seat. The instructor is an experienced patient and passionate teacher, generous with his time and humourous. I would love to do another, preferably longer Course in Bevel Woodworking School. I hope to do so before too long.read more

There was 8 in the class & we all meshed well and helped each other when possible. At the end of the 2 days we all had completed the Chair. I look at mine & I can hardly believe I made it. It's a beautiful piece of furniture. I plan on finishing mine with Danish oil, which will subtly highlight the beauty of the beach. I'm making an upholstered cushion for the seat. The instructor is an experienced patient and passionate teacher, generous with his time and humourous. I would love to do another, preferably longer Course in Bevel Woodworking School. I hope to do so before too long.read more

Brilliant. Tommy is a rare tutor, his expert eye watches over you while also giving you room and encouragement to forge ahead yourself (with classical music, the background soundtrack). 5 of the 8 of us had no previous experience with woodwork and yet somehow (miraculously) we all ended up with a beautiful Argyle chair to take home after the weekend. I found it an empowering experience, being guided to use the woodwork machines, and the chisels, saws and different planes. It was such fun and overall, a fantastic experience. I’ll return.read more

I attended the Celtic carving course led by Tommy. It was really well organized and focused on learning by doing, with expert tips from Tommy as well as opportunities to learn from ones mistakes. I had practically zero woodwork skills and over the course of the weekend learned how to use tools like a jigsaw, drill, plane, spoke scrape and chisel correctly, all while completing a wonderful chair. Myself and my wife attended Tommy's Adirondack chair weekend some time back and we both agreed that it was on of our best weekends in years. Tommy has the patience of Jobe and the knowledge and experience of a true craftsman. Tommy is a really great teacher providing hands on training, advice, encouragement and making it all a fun experience. Our boundaries were pushed a very long way but everything was totally in control and utterly absorbing. The 2 day course was planned in great detail and every aspect of the task was covered. The facilities and the tools supplied were fantastic. With his calmness, patience and advice Tommy made it an experience that was wonderful to be part of and we came home with 2 beautiful chairs which have pride of place now on our deck. Just completed the 2 day Adirondack Chair course (11/12 Aug) and enjoyed every minute. We jumped straight in and cut the first chair pieces using a jigsaw at our work benches, then used planes, drills, screwdrivers, set squares, etc which I had never touched before but soon felt at ease with the tools. Today I attended a woodcarving course held in National Heritage Park by Bevel Woodworking School. We were taught how to carve a wood spirit into a piece of timber. I arrived at Tommy's bird house making class yesterday a tad anxious having no previous knowledge or experience of woodwork. Over the course of the day I used tools and equipment I never heard of, never mind handle before and I left on my journey home with a beautiful redwood birdhouse and a sense of pride in my finished work. I did the course with my son who is 25 and it was an incredible adventure to have together. Tommy is a great teacher. I only have limited carpentry skills and was daunted at first at what I was being asked to construct. But the teacher, Tommy, has an excellent empathy with his students and explains everything in basic easy to follow steps. You don't need any carpentry skills whatsoever to do his courses. He can teach and he puts you at ease through humour and just an easy going atmosphere. I made a really good chair which is easily worth half the amount I spent on this course. So divide the course fee by two - that's the actual cost. Also, there's a lot of talk about mindfulness at the moment. This is a real experience of mindfulness. All preoccupying thoughts went out the window and for two days I was just focused on the most ancient of wood skills. Chiseling, planing, sanding, measuring, joining - it's all utterly absorbing. Two glorious days away from it all and into the bargain you leave with a fabulous Adirondack chair to spend many happy hours relaxing in on your patio or in your garden. I've finished my second course and second chair a couple of weeks ago and I am definitely going back to Bevel to do another course and make something else. Tommy has a very professional set up. Each student has their own bench and tools. All of the tools have been carefully sharpened and prepared by Tommy in advance of the course starting. The atmosphere is relaxed and Tommy is a natural teacher with a very easy way of imparting information and tips. The courses are suitable for any level and it doesn't matter if you don't have any experience - you will leave with a finished article and with the satisfaction of knowing you made it yourself. 5* experience! Just finished the two-day Adirondack chair course and I'm thrilled with the final product. Tommy is the heart and soul of the course. He gives clear, precise instructions while fostering a real sense of excitement and achievement among his students. This would be a great course for corporate team building exercises. chair making course. Great time learning various techniques (sawing, chiseling, flat planing, spoke shaving and countless tips on measurement etc) very well explained by Tommy. Tommy is a great teacher and is a natural with the class. Hadn't done any woodwork since school and had no trouble. Tommy has designed the course so every level of ability can be challenged yet achieve the same end point. Tommy is very patient and well able to teach novices. A lovely sturdy garden chair now provides great satisfaction to sit out during the summer.read more

Highly recommend the bird making course. Our group was a mix of men and women and from the ages of 9 to 63 and everyone enjoyed it just as much as the other. Tommy was so clear in his instructions and the finished piece was really something to be proud of. The whole day was great fun while learning new skills with a great teacher.
